South African Households and Unity Legal Insurance

Unity legal insurance offers affordable legal cover and support for South African households, designed to protect its policyholders from unexpected and crippling legal expenses. Also, it aims to provide simple products that are easy for the consumer to understand and are tailored to suit individual needs.

So it has three legal plans, which cover basic, mediation and litigation needs and are summarised below. Also, each plan offers different levels of cover.

South African Households

Plan A –  South African Households

Cost:  R55 per month

  • R55000 cover per year for litigation (there is a three-month waiting period before this cover applies)
  • Unlimited cover for basic or mediation benefits (with no waiting period)
  • No cover for divorce

 

Plan B

Cost:  R75 per month

  • R75000 cover per year for litigation (there is a three-month waiting period before this cover applies)
  • Unlimited cover for basic or mediation benefits (with no waiting period)
  • Cover for unopposed divorce & maintenance hearings

 

Plan C – South African Households

Cost:  R110 per month

  • R120000 cover per year for litigation (there is a one-month waiting period before this cover applies)
  • Unlimited cover for basic or mediation benefits (with no waiting period)
  • Cover for unopposed divorce & maintenance hearings
  • Cover in labour court
  • Also, cover for rescission of judgement (blacklisting)

 

These plans all include the following:

  • Cover for the policyholder, spouse and up to four dependent, unmarried children (under 21 or up to 25 if full-time students)
  • Cover for identity theft
  • 24-hour unlimited telephonic legal advice (including for pre-existing matters)
  • Also, assistance with drawing up contracts and agreements and negotiations on policy holder’s behalf
  • Court representation of labour, family, criminal and civil matters

 

The main member qualifies for the tax benefit and is therefore also entitled to the following:

  • Assistance with completing and submitting tax returns
  • Assistance with completing and submitting provisional tax returns
  • Also, assistance with resolving disputes with SARS
  • Assistance with raising objections SARS assessments
  • Advice on salary structuring
  • Tax planning – calculating capital gains tax and donations tax
  • Assistance with assessment audits

 

So to be eligible for these policies, an individual must:

  • Be between 18 and 65 years of age (main member)
  • Pay the monthly premium
  • Understand the details of the policy
